This study demonstrates how American learners of German as a second language orient to preference structure in their L2 requests. It is argued that a mere exploration of used lexis and morpho-syntax in one turn doesn't suffice to delineate L2 learners' sociopragmatic skills. Furthermore, L2 learner preference structure is addressed in the context of pragmatic transfer.
