Annotation

This paper employs historiographic and ethnographic data from isiXhosa, one of the indigenous South African languages, to consider the concepts of standardization and destandardization. It argues for an acknowledgement of speakers' practices as they use standard and non-standard forms, and linked meanings and ideologies, in presenting themselves in everyday discourse as social beings with identities, ideological positions, aims and life histories.
