Annotation

The paper deals with exaptation, i.e. the recycling of meaningless linguistic “junk” words into entirely new words. It explores the case of the two auxiliary verbs 'do' in modern English, and of alliterating near-synonyms in Kmer. The study then impeaches two functional linguistic dogmas: the irreversibility of grammaticalization and the widely held view that erosion constitutes the sole productive linguistic change process.
