Annotation

This paper discusses the findings of an ethnographic analysis of court hearings in which participants are located at two distant sites, but linked by videoconference. It focuses on details of opening sequences, and especially on one divergent case in which the presiding judge did not open the court hearing with the expected traditional, formulaic speech act .
