This study explores the deployment of “UP-DOWN” metaphors in Russian and French material. It adds 5 metaphorical models expressing vertical movement to Lakoff and Johnson (1980)'s list. It also tries to describe the relations between various metaphoric models and argues that not all metaphoric models are equally significant with respect to their evidential and conceptual vigor.
