Given that the presuppositions of a sentence determine the class of contexts in which the sentence could be felicitously uttered, complex sentences present a problem, the so-called projection problem. To eliminate this problem, K. defines the 'satisfaction of presuppositions' in such a way that it becomes unnecessary to have an explicit method for assigning presuppositions to compound sentences; the theory of presuppositions becomes a theory of constraints on successive contexts in a fully explicit discourse.
