This study discusses how intentional impoliteness influences Japanese bulletin board system (BBS) communities, according to the community's implicit norms and the forms of conveying impoliteness. It distinguishes in particular beween politeness communicated via non-honorifics in communities where honorifics either do or do not constitute the unmarked linguistic practice norm.
