Drawing on the relevance-theoretic framework, this study argues that pragmatic maxims and mechanisms are involved in the recovery of ‘de se’ attitudes in English (and in Italian), in cases in which grammatical and semantic information does not exclusively define the ‘de se’ interpretation.
