This study addressess language and power issues in intercultural English-Japanese communication and the role of English as a (gatekeeping) lingua franca, on the basis of a case study involving 'Ship for World Youth', an intense 'international exchange' programme in which English is employed uncritically as the ultimate language of intercultural communication.
