Annotation

This paper shows how, as multiple Alaskan communities are facing emerging signs of a language shift towards English, high stakes testing practices, related to the 'No Child Left Behind (NCLB)' legislation, simultaneously weaken the support for bilingual programs in Yup'ik village schools. It is argued that there is an urgent need for locally managed language research and planning.
