This cross-cultural analysis demonstrates that questions and explanations in Anglo-American and French Usenet newsgroup messages serve different conversational goals, i.e. a better understanding of the complexity of debated (environmental) issues in the first, and a mere maintenance of ordinary conversation between equals in the second group.
