This study uses Curl and Drew’s (2008) research on entitlement and contingency in request types, to explore the nature of directives in a corpus of UK family dinner conversations involving parents and their young children. It is suggested that interactants orient to requests and directives as to different actions, rather than to more or less powerful formulations of the same.
