This study examines to what extent (grassroots) languaging was productive for African (in casu Ugandan) youth engagement in language policy. Insights from the students suggest that the devastating effects of the African HIV/AIDS epidemic have often led to the rethinking of traditional customs and social relationships, sometimes exacerbating the situation. Gender inequities, poverty and possibly non-applicable Western beliefs are other important factors in the matter.
