This study develops and tests a method for distinguishing true reading errors from differences in pronunciation. The examined subjects involve (below state-mandated assessment scales scoring) elementary school pupils from African American, European American, and Latino descent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Atlanta, Georgia, and California.
