Kates, Carol A. 1980. Pragmatics and semantics: An empiricist theory. Cornell UP. 253 pp.

Annotation

In this exploration of the nature of communicative competence, K. addresses the topics of generative and universal grammar, cognitive theories of language acquisition, pragmatic structure, predication and topic-comment structure, and phenomenological empiricism. Chomsky's rationalistic theories are attacked and replaced by an empiricist theory.
