Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of frame and stance, and using the notion of “complementary stylistic resonance”, this study sets out to show how play framing, and in particular speech style shifts, are manipulated in culturally meaningful contexts of Japanese conversations among friends and to demonstrate the consequences it brings to social life.
