Annotation

As concepts of literacy and illiteracy are fluid and their meanings vary according to sociocultural-political trends and language ideologies, this study explores the recollections of Israeli former soldier-teachers from the time of the national literacy campaigns. Close attention to discourse strategies deployed in both older and more recent data sets, shows how changes in societal structure and the public identity discourse, influence the cluster of meanings along the literacy-illiteracy continuum.
