Annotation

The present paper explores information concealment in doctor-patient interactions in South-western Nigerian hospitals, using Jacob Mey’s theory of pragmeme and insights from the literature on news delivery strategies, and examines the pragmatic implications for medical communication. Concealment in consultative encounters was found to take place in a two-phase mode: referential and pragmatic, taking into account clients' socio-psychological security and cultural needs.
