Annotation

This study argues that once borrowed into a recipient language, in this case Cypriot Greek, the three English expressions, ‘thank you’, ‘sorry,’ and ‘please,’ lose much of their speech-act potential, functioning complementarily to native speech acts, primarily to denote locally relevant dimensions of variation, such as gender-, class-, ethnicity- or discourse-based variation.
