This study explores the production of refusals in English by Iranian English foreign language learners, and in particular their frequency, shift and content with regard to learners’ language proficiency, interlocutors' status, and types of eliciting acts. Refusing in an L2 appears to be a complex task which requires the acquisition of the sociocultural values of the target culture.
