Annotation

This study explores individual differences in identifying (il)legal means of discharging the burden of proof within argumentation, by analyzing college students' reactions to hypothetical two-person arguments marking four different response types to a challenge. The findings are discussed in terms of the pragma-dialectical (van Eemeren and Grootendorst, 2004) and presumptive (Walton, 1996b) argumentation models.
