By exploring the multilingual practices and metalanguage commentaries of three Chinese youngsters in Britain, this paper retells their experiences of growing up in a society, dominated by a variety of monolingual ideologies, their own multilingual practices and the creativity and criticality shown via such practices, the identity positions they negotiate and propose for themselves, and the social spaces they generate and occupy within the wider space they find themselves in.
