This study addressess the genre of (Taiwanese) research grant proposals from a cognitive–pragmatic viewpoint, considering Swales's (2004) attempt to comprehend and characterize genre as “essentially metaphorical”. Overall, it argues to consider this genre as both performance-centred and situated in “dialogic” struggle.
