Annotation

This paper discusses how the ambiguous, ‘untranslatable’ but ‘interpretable’ nature of silent pauses was found to offer opportunities for participants in interpreted police interviews, (in casu mediated by Japanese–English interpreters,) to break free from the questioning sequence typical for monolingual police interviews.
