Via an analysis of Japanese talk-in-interaction, this study argues that the practice of providing a candidate comprehension (through rephrasing) is not only recognizable as ascertaining comprehension, but can also be conditionally recognizable as succoring the trouble-source speaker in verbalizing what s/he wants to say.
