Annotation

This study discusses how e-mail requests sent by non-native English speaking Greek Cypriot university students to a faculty at a major, English-medium university in Cyprus, are characterized by directness, an omission of greetings and closings, inappropriate address forms, and absence of lexical/phrasal downgraders, and can thus be perceived as impolite, possibly causing pragmatic failure and refusal.
