Drawing on Arundale's notion of face as an interactional and relational phenomenon, conjointly co-constructed by participants, generating meanings and actions in talk-in-interaction, this conversation analytic study, exploring question and answer sessions during PhD defence sessions conducted at Iranian universities, reveals that interpreting and doing relational work are not only affected by participants’ culture but also by the talk's institutional nature.
