This study deals with the interpretation of ironic texts, based on reader responses to a (potentially ironic) letter to the editor, published in a major Finnish newspaper. Ironic interpretation appears to be mainly dependent on intentional incoherence. Ironic interpretation is finally defined as a combination of five factors.
