This article explores face management of a third party, who is neither the speaker nor the hearer, through interactional apology behavior in Korea and the United States, in situations where a family member of the speaker possibly insults another individual. As opposed to the typical collectivist/individualist distinction, both Koreans and Americans excused, overall, in similar situations, especially when the speaker was present. The factors did function differently within each nation, however.
