Annotation

Although maximally proficient bilinguals argued that their L1 was commonly felt to be more powerful than their L2, this conclusion did not automatically result in a predilection for their L1. Longer periods of time spent in the L2 culture are related to a gradual shift in linguistic practices and perceptions. Participants reported that their multilingualism and multiculturalism bestowed them a sense of autonomy and a feeling of freedom.
