This study explores cross-cultural communication in English between Americans and native Brazilian Portuguese speaking (English a a second language learning) individuals via the lens of intercultural pragmatics. It identified pragmatic transfer among the ESL learners, who also demonstrated a developing awareness of the sociolinguistic norms of the American English target language and its speakers.
