This empirical crosslinguistic diachronic study of two sets of cognate expressions in English and in French (i.e. the pair 'actually-actuellement 'and the pair 'in fact-en fait/de fait/au fait'), which have evolved partially in the same and partially in distinct directions, aims at contributing to a further comprehension of grammaticalization processes .
