In newly arrived immigrant families, children and youth often serve as language brokers for adults such as their parents. In public and academic debate, this behavior may be negatively depicted as inflicting exorbitant responsibility burdens on youth. Bilingual speakers though, especially those with language brokering experience, consider these activities as ‘normal' and often demonstrate an enriched, more subtle appreciation of matters involved.
