This article discusses how Hong Kong's less prosperous South Asians invest less in Chinese language acquisition and practice. Their language motivation is instrumentally driven and there is a deficiency of appropriate family support for mastering Chinese. The study thus emphasizes the role of education and teachers’ support in Chinese language acquisition as the major remedy for inadequate parental involvement, especially as achieving high Chinese language proficiency is considered essential for upward mobility.
