Annotation

This study (2009) shows that although youth use of Indian ancestral languages in the domestic field in multilingual Mauritius is gradually decreasing and being substituted by the use of Creole and French, ancestral Indian languages are nonetheless still being conserved by the older generations and via conducive educational policies. At secondary (school) level though, ancestral Indian languages are considered useless and unwieldy, in particular in this technological era, where a good knowledge of English and French is linked with upward social mobility and academic achievement.
