Annotation

Citétaal (initially deployed to designate the language spoken by Italian immigrants in the mining areas of the East of Flanders (Limburg)) constitutes a mixture of Dutch with immigrant languages, mainly Italian and Turkish. This study explores to what degree and in what contexts Citétaal is nowadays used by both immigrant and native Limburg adolescents. Its use appears to be primarily meant for peer communication. Also, Citétaal is changing from distinguishing ethnicity to marking a new, localised identity.
