The deployment of sarcasm sometimes reduces and sometimes increases the intrinsic negativity of a sarcastic statement. Employing a realistic conversational format, participants read either a sarcastic or a non-sarcastic aggressive argument between same-gendered interlocutors, and rate the expressed pragmatic goals using a series of measures derived from previous studies.
