Annotation

This interview study shows that fishermen's women, living in a remote fishing community in the far north of Scotland, produce potentially competing versions of themselves: the constraints faced as fishermen’s wives, but also the freedoms and opportunities that arise from this situation. These descriptions generate forms of self comprehensible as gender accomplishments in the local context of talk about fishing as a male occupation and its impact on women’s lives, and they are discussed in relation to the notion of ‘hybrid identities’.
