This paper focuses on practical reasoning in political talk and advocates a better integration of argumentation theory within critical discourse analysis (CDA). It provides an analysis of the key argument in the UK government’s 2008 Pre-Budget Report (HM Treasury, 2008) and argues that a critical evaluation of the argument from the viewpoint of a normative theory of argumentation can offer the basis for an assessment in terms of typical CDA concerns.
