From a critical and ethnographic sociolinguistic perspective, this study argues that, via various micro- control strategies, evaluation and moral hierarchization, the government employees at the information desk of a Spanish immigration office in Barcelona, enact the disciplinary and exclusionary regime of the nation-state, and socialize their clients into becoming ‘good’ migrants.
