This study employs an intergroup communication framework, to explore how a regional newspaper in southeastern Virginia discursively constructs the “illegal immigrant” as a metonym for Latino immigrants. The analysis also demonstrates some of the ways that media discourse affects perceived intergroup menaces at the local and national planes.
