Annotation

The question of what makes up an authentic speaker, especially concerning African American Vernacular English (AAVE), has been debated in sociolinguistics, and arises anew in the case of white hip-hop–affiliated youth (WHHs) who converge toward AAVE in their speech. This study provides strong internal evidence backing the idea that some white hip-hop–affiliated youth (WHHs) are “performing” a speech style that varies from their unmarked style.
