This analysis of a little-studied review genre of academe -letters written for faculty retention, promotion, and tenure (RPT)- discloses that letter writers evaluated faculty in terms of seven key dimensions of their work and reveals three distinct ideals of faculty performance, which both promote and obscure faculty work realities. Moreover, whilst negative evaluation was sometimes directly expressed, it was typically mitigated, demonstrating community concerns with politeness when assessing colleagues.
