Annotation

This study investigates lexical variation patterns in the homeland varieties of Faetar and Cellese, endangered Francoprovençal dialects spoken in two southern Italian villages, and in Toronto, one of their biggest émigré speech communities. The absence of systematic differentiation patterns across age, sex, social class, and regional groups suggests that diachronic lexical variation may not be represented synchronically in the same manner as the structural variables that make up the bulk of quantitative sociolinguistic research.
