To examine the pragmatics of humor reception, this study analyzes young adult responses to a Daily Mail cartoon on a gay marriage. The appreciation of a multimodal joke appears to depend heavily on individual background knowledge, values and attitudes and also on the broader socio-cultural cartoon context.
