Annotation

This study argues that backgrounded incongruities affect humor appreciation because their suppression entails lower funniness and greater aversion. Moreover, the backgrounded incongruities strongly add to the perceived joke absurdity. When removed, the jokes are considered less as nonsense humor, yet more as incongruity-resolution humor.
