This article discusses the results of a study executed to distinguish and clarify the sources and nature of misunderstanding in intercultural communication in English as a lingua franca. Whereas culture- and language-related differences hardly explain misunderstanding in this context, the source of many of the misapprehensions appears to be attributable to utterance ambiguity; some other reasons comprise mishearing and lack of world knowledge.
