This study presents an overall theoretical framework for the strategic elasticity of vague language (VL). Highlighting the positive and efficacious role of VL, this qualitative study explores how the VL theory is established, clarified via the real-life data of tension-prone service encounters between Australian Customs officers and passengers. Whilst vagueness is context- and culture-dependent, its elasticity appears universal.
