This paper discusses how the treatment of foreign words in two translations of classic Russian nineteenth century literary works, namely Lermontov's "A hero of our time" and Tolstoy's "War and peace", may reverse the target reader's perception of domestic and foreign, a translation “shift” that extends far beyond traditional semantics studies and plays a possibly important role in the cultural "Otherness" construction.
