This study explores the suppositions underlying recent changes in Singapore's language-in-education policy, in particular at the primary school level, and indicates that the ‘English + 1’ bilingual policy ‘success’ defies the maintenance of the cultural/ethnic language learning of Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.
